| Denis Lorenz, professor of art, playfully prepares to draw in a classic piece of literature held by Ron Heckelman, professor of English, at Lone Star College-Montgomery. The two will merge art and literature in a unique two-class learning community (Art Appreciation and World Literature) that is being offered during the upcoming fall semester at the college. |
In cultural circles, the topics of art and literature often go hand in hand. A visit to the local art gallery can often lead to a discussion of Shakespeare. A trip to the library may yield an interesting conversation about Rubens’ classic works.
This fall at Lone Star College-Montgomery, art and literature collide in the classroom, with two of the college’s long-time, award-winning faculty members joining forces to offer a pair of classes—English 2332 (Classic World Literature) and Art 1301 (Art Appreciation). Both classes are part of the college’s only fall semester learning community—two classes offered back to back with the same students in each class.
While the instructors, Dr. Ron Heckelman, professor of English, and Denise Lorenz, professor of art, encourage all credit students to consider the art and literature combination, they also stress that community members interested in the topics are welcome to enroll.
The two classes meet back-to-back on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m.-2:20 p.m. Students must register for both classes and credit students must have completed English 1301 and 1302.
“In the class, we will apply basic principles of design to art and literature,” said Dr. Heckelman, who has taught at the college for 10 years and has conducted learning communities on other topics. “Student will be able to view cultures that link art and literature throughout history. We will read, write create, and even take a field trip to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.”
Add Lorenz: “There will be hands-on activities help the students truly experience the concepts that apply to both art and literature. However, in no way do students have to be artists to enroll. This is a combination for anyone who is interested in learning more about art and literature and how they are connected.”
Interested students are encouraged to register early before the August enrollment rush, as seats are filling quickly.
